Why import horses for others?

Here at North Fork we realize that we can't possibly have enough stock on hand to satisfy everyone's needs. The number of quality breeders here in North America and especially in Canada is very limited and the supply of mature breeding stock is extremely limited. There are still many high quality horses being imported from Europe and we have been fortunate to have made some great contacts there with people whose families have been breeding these wonderful horses for many, many generations.

Why use us as a middle man when you can go direct to the source? Good question.

There are a good number of people that have built up a good relationship with their suppliers in Europe. They trust them based on past experience, know the ins and outs of importing horses and have no need for someone to handle the whole process for them.

If you're an importer, this is the way it works. Horses are paid for in full before they leave Europe. Shipping, quarantine and veterinarian costs are very expensive and you pay all of these costs before you ever get your hands on your horse. Trust me...there is no refusing a shipment of horses or getting your money back when it comes in from overseas.

So if you've never imported horses before, don't know any suppliers personally, the whole process scares you, or you simply don't have the time to make it all come together... that's what we're here for!

Why use North Fork specifically?

What would you say if you told a friend that you were going to buy a $30,000.00+ horse from Europe? You tell them you're buying it from someone you've never met, have never done business with, and all you know about the horse is what they tell you. Oh yes - but you've seen a few photos of the horse and maybe a video. Their first polite reaction might be..."don't you think it might be smarter to deal with someone a little closer?" This is exactly why we used someone “local" to help us import our very first horses. Sure we knew that we would pay a little extra but at least they knew what they were doing...we didn't, so there was a certain comfort built in.

Understand this about us here at North Fork. We aren't sitting here feeling like we have to compete against other Gypsy breeders right now in any way shape or form. The Gypsy Cob market here in North America is still so small that we are hoping for more quality people to join in, breeding and promoting this amazing breed. Our purpose in bringing horses in for others is to promote the breed, our own stock and services and make just enough profit in the transaction to make it worth our while, but not to take advantage of our customers' trust. The long and short of it is... we want you to be able to say, why wouldn't we deal through North Fork for all our import needs with what they have to offer?

As you will see when you go to the "Horses for Import" sale page, we don't try and hide our suppliers from you in any way...their names appear in front of the name of the horse. We do not have exclusive rights to market their horses here in North America and we are very comfortable with that. What we do have with our suppliers is a relationship built on our past business dealings and a mutual desire to work together to handle all the details of selecting, importing and delivering the highest quality Gypsy cobs available from Europe. All this and at a price no more than if had you done all the work of importing yourself. That's what we call a win/win/win situation.

Here's just a few things you will find different about us as opposed to many importers out there...

  • You are free to contact our suppliers directly by phone or email at any time with any questions or concerns you might have. They are a valuable resource as their families have been breeding these horses for many generations. \
  • Our main supplier is approved by the UKMinistry for Agriculture to carry out the mandatory pre-export quarantine required by the Canadian and US Government. Their facility is provided free of charge to their clients as opposed to a normal cost of 900 EUR.
  • All horses are cared for by experts with regards to their nutritional, physical and emotional needs.
  • If you really want the horse home from Europe in a hurry, we can provide a "swift" service that will have your horse imported and home in not much more than a month, give or take a little based on when the flight leaves. Most importers wait to have enough horses sold to fill a container before they import them and want you to believe that by waiting they can save you some more money...this is simply not the truth. Our airline fills the containers whether it is with our horses or someone else's and ship weekly. Those are the facts - you don't pay more if you only ship one at a time!
  • We offer a World Class Stallion line up for our customers who have purchased from us. This means you have your choice of stallion to rebreed your mare to, at a much discounted rate for your first time breeding.
  • Our satisfaction guarantee - see below.

Our Goal...

We will help our customer find the horse or horses to suit their exact needs. If it is not readily available, we will search to find it through the resources we have at our disposal.

We will import these horses for our customers at a price not much more than they would have paid had they gone direct to the supplier themselves. We will make the process easy and stress free for our clients and handle all the details and paperwork of importing ourselves. From Europe to your door...we'll take care of you all the way.

We are totally committed to this breed and seeing it develop here in North America to the highest standards of quality possible. We will not ever import an average quality Gypsy Cob at any time. When you buy from us, our reputation is on the line every time and we will not waiver on the quality of stock we bring in...EVER! If a horse is not good enough to be accepted into our own herd, it's not good enough for our customers either.

Our Satisfaction Guarantee...

We are so confident in the quality of horses we bring in that we will stand behind them 100%. *If for some reason you feel that the horse we have imported for you does not meet your expectations when you see them for the first time in “real life"...we will refund all but 10% of your total bill. Again, we will never bring a horse in that we would not feel good about bringing into our own herd so we have no problem making this offer to our customers.
